Saying Goodbye

I gave her a soft, gentle kiss,
She gave me the sweetest, sad smile.
And I turned and took flight, to save her the sight
Of the tears of a heartbroken child.

“No tears, no dramatic farewell:
No grandiose gesture goodbye.
Just hug me”, she said, as she sat up in bed,
“And look me, once more, in the eye.”

So I told her I loved her, and left,
While she still had that beautiful spark.
Then the tears flowed free, not for her, but for me,
As I walked in the snow, through the park.
